VVS vs VS Diamonds: What Is the Difference? by The Don Jewelers & Jewelry

Clarity grades describe inclusions

VVS diamonds have inclusions that are very difficult for a trained grader to see at 10-times magnification. VS diamonds have minor inclusions that range from difficult to somewhat easier to see under the same controlled magnification.

Eye-clean appearance depends on the stone

Whether an inclusion is visible without magnification depends on its size, color, location, relief, the diamond's shape, and the viewer. Many properly selected VS diamonds appear clean to the unaided eye and can provide strong value.

Location can matter more than the label

An inclusion beneath the table may be more noticeable than one near a protected edge. Certain inclusions can also affect durability or setting decisions, so review the plotting diagram, magnified media, and the actual diamond rather than relying on the summary grade alone.

Balance clarity with cut and design

Cut quality, proportions, color, face-up dimensions, and setting style influence the finished appearance. Confirm a GIA or IGI report where offered, match the report number to the stone, and choose the combination that fits the design and budget.
